FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT SERENE LIVING FAMILYSAFEOILS™
Q. What is an essential oil?
A. Essential oils are a collection of chemical constituents extracted from plants. Hundreds, sometimes thousands of pounds of plant matter are used to obtain a single ounce of essential oil. This high concentration of plant constituents makes even one drop extremely powerful and effective.
What's in a drop of essential oil? Many species contain hundreds of individual chemical constituents. Each constituent has its own special therapeutic properties, and most have been given a name (others are yet to be discovered and researched).
Many constituents have been well studied and are documented to be effective in providing relief for an array of health issues. But some also have safety concerns that make them inappropriate to use around children, during pregnancy, for people with specific health issues, or around pets. Some constituents are skin irritants, have adverse reactions with sunlight (phototoxicity), or create allergic reactions which can lead to sensitization. The essential oils with these constituents need to be carefully diluted to a specific ratio with a carrier oil (like coconut or jojoba oil) to be safe to use.
But don't think that you need a chemistry classes to figure this stuff out -- we've done the work for you. Our FamilySafeOils™ have labels designed to communicate which family members can use them safely. We've even included information for Fido! We let you know the applicable dilution you should use, and any other general safety concerns that you need to know to tap into the power of essential oils.
Q. How do you know if essential oils are high quality?
A. The purity and quality of an essential oil is determined through GC/MS testing. Serene Living takes this seriously and has their oild third party tested to independently verify no adulteration. To evaluate quality, GC/MS isolates each chemical component and quantifies their precentages, establishing therapeutic benefits and their safety.
If a manufacturer does not provide GC/MS testing then they are not a credible supplier. Serene Living oils are 100% tested and proven to be unadulterated and pure. They have been tested to be of therapeutic quality and har aromatically pleasing.
Q. How do I know if Serene Living essential oils are safe to use with my children?
A. Just check the bottle! Our clearly marked labels were designed to communicate this information to you. All of our FamilySafeOils™ blends have been formulated to be safe to use with children. All but three of our singles can be used with children of all ages -- we recommend waiting to use Peppermint until age 6 (due to menthol, which can slow respiration), and Eucalyptus and Rosemary until age 10 (due to high levels of 1,8-cineole, which can cause respiratory distress).
Q. How do I know if Serene Living essential oils are safe to use during pregnancy?
A. Just check the bottle! Our clearly marked labels were designed to communicate this information to you. All of our singles and FamilySafeOils™ blends have been formulated to be safe to use during pregnancy.
Q. How do I know if Serene Living essential oils are safe to use if I breastfeed?
A. Just check the bottle! Our clearly marked labels were designed to communicate this information to you. All of our singles and FamilySafeOils™ blends have been formulated to be safe to use during lactation.
Q. How do I know if Serene Living essential oils are safe to use around my pets?
A. Just check the bottle! Our clearly marked labels were designed to communicate this information to you. All but two singles are safe to use around dogs, and 11 of our FamilySafeOils™ blends are also safe to use around dogs. We do not recommend using essential oils around cats.
Q. How do I know how to safely use Serene Living essential oils?
A. All safety information is provided right on the bottle: who can use the essential oil, what dilution to use, and safety considerations.
Q. Why do I have to dilute Serene Living essential oils?
A. Some essential oil constituents are irritants, can cause phototoxic reactions when exposed to sunlight, or cause sensitization. To minimize the chances of adverse reactions, oils have a known topical max, or highest safe concentration. After they are diluted to the recommended level they can be safely used. These dilutions are clearly marked on all Serene Living FamilySafeOils™. Essential oils without a topical max should still be diluted, and general guidelines are found on the bottle and on the corresponding profile page.
Q. Are Serene Living Oils Therapeutic Grade?
A. Serene Living FamilySafeOils™ are 100% pure, unadulterated, undiluted, high quality essential oils with no additives -- and are therefore therapeutic. There is no official governing body who issues grades of essential oils, and the term “therapeutic grade” is used for marketing purposes only.Q. Are Serene Living Oils organic?
A. Our essential oils are 100% pure, unadulterated, undiluted, high quality essential oils with no additives. We make sure the plants grow in the right areas of the world, and at the right elevations, to be sure therapeutic properties are at their optimum levels. Quality is the most important factor -- not whether or not they are labeled "organic."
It is important to note that even if plants are sprayed with pesticides in the early stages of growth, many are left unsprayed during the last few months before they are harvested. By that time, pesticides are no longer found on the plant and are not present in GC/MS tests (available to you by request at Nesting). The bottom line is this: you can grow "organic" plants on a farm outside of their natural habitat and they won't be as therapeutic as a plant grown in its natural habitat. We prefer the end result to be a high quality essential oil, no matter how it was grown.Q. Does Serene Living perform GC/MS testing?
A. We sure do! Results from these precise tests are used at Serene Living to determine the purity of each batch of essential oil we receive from our suppliers, and the results are posted right here on our website for you to view.
Q. How do I know I can trust your safety information?
A. We hired safety expert and certified aromatherapist Lea Harris to consult with us on all our FamilySafeOils™profile and informational pages. It is important to us that our customers know how to use our essential oils safely and effectively.
Q. Do you recommend that Serene Living essential oils be used internally?
A. Essential oils are concentrated substances that can have powerful effects. When essential oils are ingested without direction from a knowledgeable professional, they can cause internal or systemic damage. The reason for this is because nearly 100% of the essential oil reaches the bloodstream when ingested, as opposed to just 10% when used topically. Most health issues people are trying to remedy when choosing to ingest essential oils can be more effectively be managed via other application methods: inhaling, diffusing, and topical use. We do not recommend using essential oils internally unless you are under the care of a qualified aromatherapy professional. If you are receiving this care, our essential oils are of the highest quality and can be used as recommended by your healthcare professional.Q. How do I know which Serene Living FamilySafeOils™ I need?
A. The FDA does not allow us to tell you our FamilySafeOils™ can treat, cure, or prevent a disease or health issue. What we can do is help you learn how to enhance your health and encourage your body’s overall wellness. And that is the information you will find on our profile pages.
Q. Purchasing Serene Living oils through Nesting is so affordable. How is this possible?
A. Serene Living purchases in bulk directly from quality distillers, cutting out the middle man. In turn, once essential oils are packaged and perfected they are distributed directly to qualified retailers for consumer sales. Serene Living does not rely on the direct sales method of doing business, so there is no need to add extra cost to pay company reps. Everyone wins! All About Serene Living
Serene Living is an essential oil company in Pleasant Grove, Utah offering safe and effective oil products. What makes Serene Living special is the length the company has gone to test its oils by a third-party laboratory as well as the safety and use guideline information provided to customers printed on the oil bottles and published on product pages.
Oils are sourced from a number of trusted U.S. distributors who provide safety data sheets and certificates of analysis. Serene Living goes one step further to analyze its essential oils. Every batch of its essential oils goes to an established laboratory based in Utah for an additional GC-MS test.
Serene Living launched in January 2016 with an introductory product offering of singles, blends, diffusers and accessories. The company has plans to expand its products in the future.
